Déjame te cuento sobre... ¡Kate Moross!
Art director. Illustrator. Designer. "But I like to call myself a jack of all trades". This is Kate Moross.
But, how did they get here? Let's backtrack... here.
"I sorta started illustration and I drew lots of these quite shit flyers to get into parties I wanted to go to. So I kinda felt myself trapped in this cycle of basically the person that does bubble lettering for a living which is great but it's also quite basic and it doesn't really give me a big amount of estimulation in what I'm doing."
"You know, I did all this bubble lettering for a few years and then all of sudden I was being paid to do it in a much bigger scale. So I thought, 'You know what I should with money? Is start a record label'. So that's what you shouldn't do with money 'cause it's possibly like the worst thing you could do, to just pour all your money down the sink. And if you wanted to waste any more of that, you could only sell vynil. I ended up releasing five records on my label."
"So, after doing that - creating the label, which I really made 'cause I wanted to design record sleeves - I actually got started to get asked to design record sleeves. So, I kinda didn't need a record label anymore because I was getting to do what I wanted to do without losing all of my money. So, I realized I was onto something here and in 2012 I established Studio Moross."
(Studio Moross, Studio Moross, Studio Moross)
"And ever since then, we've been working in the music industry."
But what makes their work so incredible? Their own practice of learning everything they're able to. They do not settle for one thing exclusively, as they say: "I kinda don't agree with expertise or expertism". This leads to them being boundary breakers, from gender to design. This queer, London-baseed creative is bringing a new approach to the music business with their own freedom and willingness to experiment.
The composition within their works is inspired by eveything you can find in your own daily life. "When I want to interact with visual design, I go to the supermarket". They mix and match, creating new aesthetics that stand out and are fun to look at. One example of this are the 2016 VMA's graphics.
The motion design used in them was inspired by responsive web applications, with the base design following a strict grid. On top, they worked with digital collage, rotoscopic and hand drawn animation to disrupt the clean aesthetic. This only proves further that what they do is go beyond what is already known.
And that is... Kate Moross.
